Red black and grey in the sea....

Just a quick post tonight so I can get in a couple of challenges before the deadlines pass - but tonight's the first time I've had the energy to craft this week after the fayre at the weekend.

I wanted to play in the secret saturday challenge "in the sea" with my new papertrey whale set and I thought it would make a nice, if somewhat unusual, masculine card if I did it with the colours of our creative corner's colour challenge - black, grey and neutrals with a pop of red.

A very simple card to make - I just cut some different grey papers with fancy cut scissors to create my sea, stamped my whale in london fog ink and cut with the matching die.  I added red hearts out of his blow hole and a matching red sentiment for the required "pop" of red.

LIM Take another 3

This week over at Less is More, Chrissie and Mandi want us to pick any 3 of the last 29 challenges and combine them into this weeks card - and with that many to choose from, it was obvious I would be doing more than one (although for me there were only 28 to choose from as there was no way I was revisiting acetate voluntarily!!!)

I opted for:

Week 2 - Flowers or Trees
Week 6 - Off the Edge
Week 14 - White on White
Week 15 - Embossing

I started with a 12cm white card, and cut a lot of smaller squares (6, 3, 2, 1.5 and 1cm) and corresponding layers half a cm smaller for each.  I embossed the larger squares with a snakeskin embossing folder and stuck those to the card (some embossed up, some debossed up).  I stamped 3 different branches from an elzybels set in embossing ink, "off the edge" of the smaller squares, for the two larger branches I stamped them across two squares each so the image goes off the edge of one, and onto the edge of the other, and embossed all with white tinsel ep.  This ep does has a little silver glitter in it - hope it still counts as WoW.  I added clear square crystals to the 1cm squares and finished with a sentiment from the same set in silver (sorry didn't show up in white!)

That's it for me today - need to go and box up all the cards ready for tomorrow.

Thanks for stopping by.

LIM tripple meets daring kraft

This week over at Less is More, Chrissie and Mandi want us to pick any 3 of the last 29 challenges and combine them into this weeks card - oh dear - another challenge with too many options to choose from....   I have a feeling this won't be my only card this week!

My mind went immediately to the first sketch challenge (Week 8) as I really love that sketch and use it often so that's my first challenge down.  I got my first ever set of paper smooch stamps this weeks from Make the Day Special in the UK (finally hurrah!) and really wanted to play with them, so I opted for the masculine challenge (Week 7) and my final combined challenge is embossing (Week 15).  I am also combining in a 4th challenge, from this weeks Daring Cardmakers, who want us to use kraft and natural materials.

I stared with a black DL card and heat embossed the sentiment in copper direct to the card.  I added a strip of corrugated card which is wrapped with jute twine in the grooves.  The TV is stamped on smooth kraft, shaded with copics and pencils and the screen given a coat of glossy accents.  I cut this out and stuck it onto a white nestie circle and stamped the ariel onto that.

It will be going along to the fayre with me tomorrow where we are selling all the cards that have kindly been donated for sale in aid of St Luke's Hospice - many by fellow LIMettes, so THANK YOU to all who have donated.  If you want to check out the charity challenge blog then there are still a few days to enter our beach themed challenge for which you can win a voucher for Quixotic Paperie.   ST LUKE'S CHARITY CARDS CHALLENGE BLOG

Old and sticky....

I do like challenges which ask you to delve into all your old stuff and show it some love rather than leaving it to fester in a dark forgotton corner, but as I have, like all of us I'm sure, far too much stuff, when it's a open "something old" I often find it hard to make a decision what to use.  This was the case with this weeks' challenge at Just Add Ink, so I had a delve and found my mojo lost in the enormity of my old stash pile....

However, today, the new challenge at CAS-ual Friday's is out and as they want us to use stickers on our card, this helped me narrow my search somewhat!  I have tonnes of stickers, but haven't used any in an age, so a perfect combo of both challenges.

I used three old peel off stickers, the flower was a black and I stuck that to white card and coloured with polychromos pencils - the circle border and the sentiment were also peel offs but one was gold, the other was silver, but I coloured them both with a black copic to match the flower.  I used some yellow and red patterned DP to match the colour of the flower.

Peels off have fallen out of fashion somewhat, but I do think they are still a great product when used selectively.

Snippets...

Just a very quick post today, but I wanted to share my snippet make for this week.  By snippet make I mean a card I've made only using pieces of already cut and leftover decorative papers, you know the ones us crafters just can't throw no matter how tiny!   Jules has a great challenge on her blog every week to encourage us to use up these snippets before the stash of them takes over the world and this is my entry to that challenge this week.....

It's for my friend for her nephew's wedding.   I've CASEd the invite which had a bumpy purple square and two linked white hearts.  I opted for bumpy hearts (old die) from two complimentary shades of purple and a very pale fancy border cut with two nesties - all snippets.  The border is actually a snippet of white vellum which I coloured with a very pale lilac ink pad and blotted for a soft romantic feel.  The sentiment is Waltzingmouse, and I've inked it with two shades of purple to compliment the hearts.

I'll be making her a wedding card to compliment this nearer the date I expect.

That's all for today folks ;-)

CASual Embossing

This week's challenge at CASual Friday's is to use embossing, either dry or heat.  I made one card with purely dry embossing on Friday evening, but really wanted to play with my heat gun on Saturday and had planned a little series of mini cards to go to the craft sale for St Luke's this coming weekend.  However, one of my jobs on Saturday was to book tickets for our favourite comedian who is doing a few extra gigs at the National Theatre for a show we missed out on getting tickets for a few weeks ago - tickets went on sale at 9.30 am and I FINALLY secured mine at 4.17 pm precisely, after numerous screen refreshers on the laptop and frustrated redails on the phone.  Needless to say, this somewhat curtailed my crafting plans.....

I did manage one mini card, and will all the prep for the craft sale still left to do, it looks like he will be on his loansome so I thought I'd share him now and stop pretending I'll find time to make him any friends this week.

The plant and sentiment are both from an Elzybels set (sadly no longer trading) which were stamped with versamark and embossed with extra fine copper ep.  I then dry embossed a strip of kraft card using a border embossing folder and it isn't showing up too well on the photo but I added a copper rub-on cream to the raised areas to match the embossing powder.  I may make a set of these at a later date as I think they could make very useful little cards with a variety of sentiments.

Butterfly Tilda

There were quite a few challenges I fancied having a go at this week - the first of which was Magnolia Down Under's "Butterfly" challenge as I've had this butterfly tilda for ages but don't think she's seen ink before.  I decided however, that a few of the challenges were complimentary so instead of just one image, I used the masking technique as required at Craft Room Challenge to "create a scene" which is the challenge at The Secret Crafters Saturday Challenge.  Also by creating a scene, I've grounded my image, rather than have her floating in mid-air which is the challenge at Make it Colourful this week.  Finally I wanted to play with banners which is part of the theme at both Cooking it up with Katie, and CES Challenges.  The resulting card is more cohesive that this might all sound....

I started with butterfly tilda, stamped with tuxedo black onto white blending card, created a mask of her and stamped over the magnolia fence to the left, masked over that again and stamped the fence to the right to make it a little longer.  It's only just barely visible on the card (flash photography - will try again tomorrow in daylight) but to finish my scene I also added a couple of clouds using white pearl with a hint of blue on a cloud stamp using the masking technique again.  The image is coloured mostly with copics, but the grass is pencils as it's very fine lines and I find pencils easier for this level of detail.  (Edit - here's the daylight photo version - the clouds still didn't show up in the photo so I added glimmer dust to give them a "silver lining")

I took my colours from the die cut banner and matching DP which are both from craft candy, as is the sentiment "ribbon".  I used a little pink ribbon to cover the DP join as this was one of the elements from Cooking it up with Katie (along with die cuts and a banner)  I finished with a couple of gems to highlight the banner.

Borderless images.....

There's been a bit of a trend going on in blogland and on the make it crafty facebook page for colouring your images WITHOUT a black stamped border.  The idea is to either stamp in a pale colour (grey or beige) or print at a reduced quality if a digi, and to try to colour the image.  I have to say it is pretty tricky, but the resulting effect is similar to the sorts of illustrations you see in children's books and I really like it!

This is my first attempt at colouring without black, so be gentle with me:

I was really happy with the hat - I think it looks very leather like with all the blending, but the clothes need more work.  Once I'd coloured her I added the eyes back in black with a fineliner as they had all but disappeared in the beige momento ink I'd used to stamp with under the copics on her face.  I added a white dot to them too.  I then cut her out, and mounted her onto a a card with a suitably "cowgirl" background.

Stamps:  Greeting Farm Wild West Anya, Waltzingmouse  Way Out West  (background) and Back in the Saddle (sentiment)
Other materials - copic markers, spellbinders lables die, ribbon punch, ribbon, momento ink (dessert sand), DL card blank

Challenges entered:
Aud Sentiments - Anything goes
Paper Crafting Journey - Anything goes
Challenge up your life - No patterned paper
Sir Stampalot - Anything goes

So, go and dig out a nice pale ink pad and give it a go - I dare you!

Blue movement

As LIM want us to show movement on our cards, I thought this was the perfect challenge to use Mo Manning's cartwheel image on a spinner.   I've coloured him all in blue as that is the challenge for this week's challenge on Mo's challenge site.

I've coloured him with copics, and added some additional shading on top with polychromos pencils.  I added glaze to his wellies to make them look like rubber.   To stick with the blue theme on Mo's challenge I added a blue card frame to conceal the spinner mechanism, and finished with a couple of sentiments from Hero Arts stamped in a bright pearl blue.

As Less is More is all about movement - I've attempted a little video clip to show Georgie doing his cartwheel in all it's glory.  (edit - video seems to have stopped working - sorry - if anyone knows why, give me a heads up and I'll try and fix it)

Off to make dinner - catch you all later.

Craftilicious x

Embossed movement

The challenge at CAS-ual Friday this week is to use embossing - either dry or wet, and the challenge this morning at Less is More is to have something on your card which moves - either physically (like a spinner, shaker etc) or an image of something which moves.

I've used a crafts too embossing folder with butterflies on buttercup yellow cardstock, and then I've used the Stampin! Up butterfly embosslit to cut and emboss some more butterflies on kraft paper.  I stuck those on top of some of the embossed buttterflies and added a sentiment from Amy R.  Mounted on black and onto kraft cardstock.

As this is a very "krafty" card, I'm also entering it into The Spotted Chick's "That's Krafty Thursday" challenge too.

I have another couple of idea for both challenges so will see you later.

Flashback!

This week's challenge at Moving Along With The Times is a really cool idea - they want us to look back at our favourite project, relink it to a new post and say why it's special to us.  Super cool and easy peasy so do join in!

Actually, choosing one favourite might not be that easy after all!  I finally decided on this Kraftin Kimmie card I made back in February as I designed the mechanism for the card to open and this was the first "tutorial" I ever tried to create.  It also features a lot of paper-piecing with copic shading on top which is one of my favourite techniques.

This is also my all time favourite Kraftin Kimmie stamp set - it's a whole "Happy Days/Grease" style set of 1950's characters.  It's still available to buy in the UK from Quixotic Paperie if you missed it on release.  If you want to read the full details of how I made this card, then the original tutorial can be found here http://craftilicious-yorkshire.blogspot.com/2011/02/kraftin-kimmie-gdt-contest-week-4.html

Tea dance?

Excuse the poor pun, but today is the 17th which means it's waltz day on the Waltzingmouse Forum and this months theme is tea or coffee so tea and a waltz is a tea dance right?  If you want to know more about the waltz then this is the place to go http://waltzingmouse.blogspot.com/p/friends-blog-waltz.html

I stamped a frame with the frame-it set from Waltzingmouse (which is straight honest - its the photo that's wonky!) and added the appropriate sentiment from the same set into the frame all in a pearl crimson ink.  The stack of cups is made using lots of little snippets of dp traced through a papermania henbury lane stencil, cut out and stuck onto a piece of card I cut to the full stencil.  I added some lines with my fine liner and a little shading inside the cups with copics.  As I used lots of iddy-biddy bits of papers from my stash, I am also going to post this on Jule's Sunday Snippets challenge -http://jules-alwayswithaheart.blogspot.com/2011/08/jules-crafty-snippet-challenge-week-32.html - do I get extra points for the number of different snippets on one card Jules????

I'll be waltzing around the rest of the entries later today.

Not quite Robbie....

It's my husband's bosses birthday tomorrow so I've made a card for him to give him.  He works in a small independent comic/book/sci-fi shop called Sheffield Space Centre which has been going for about 30 years now and has lots of loyal, if a little geeky, supporters and with only 4 staff they're all pretty close so do send each other cards and presents.  The man in question is a big fan of Robbie the Robot  from The Forbidden Planet which I don't have an image for, but I thought this little robot from Christy Croll's Stamping Bella range was the close enough....

He's stamped onto blending card and coloured with just cool and toner grey copics (with a little yellow for the cake) and I've highlighted his "studs" with silver.  I used what I like to call the "heinz" nestie lables as I think they lend themselves to masculine images - I got the DP yesterday, but stupidly threw the packaging away when I opened it and don't know who its by - sorry.  The ticket is a whimsey rubber stamp (cut by hand as I haven't gotten around to getting the die yet but it's an easy shape to cut freehand) and the sentiment is from elyzbels.  I finished with some silver rivets in the corners which are actually craft candy dots, but cut smaller with my cropadile.

He fits a couple of challenges:

At Cards for Men - it's nice and easy this week - anything goes as long as it's masculine - http://cardsformen.blogspot.com/2011/08/challenge-17-anything-goes.html

Cute card thursday want something clean and simple and I think he's a cute robot, and my design is pretty CAS - http://cutecardthursday.blogspot.com/2011/08/challenge-177-clean-simple.html

Hope you like him as much as I do ;-)

Summer beach

The recipe at cooking it up with katie this week is to use some embossing, make it for summer, and use a punch or die cutting.  So I've used the recipe to create another reminder for our "beside the seaside" challenge at St Luke's this month.  To me, nothing says summer by the beach more than an icecream - I have fond memories of the "lemon-top" from Scarborough as a kid, so I've gone with an ice-cream for my card.  Unfortunately my ribbon was pink, not yellow, so my lemon-top became a raspberry-top instead!

The icecream is an ellison thin cuts die, layered onto a couple of nesties and I embossed the base card with my "stitches" folder which in this case reminds me of the waffle cone on an ice-cream.  The sentiment is from a hampton arts set - stamped in pistachio to match the mat behind the ice-cream and because that's my favourite flavour...

I am also entering this into the stamp challenges dog days of summer challenge.

Do have a look at our challenge site at all the inspiration the DT girls have to offer and then enter your cards before the end of the month for the chance to win a voucher from Quixotic Paperie.

Now we just need the sunshine........

CAS-ual Inky Cake Colours

I'm doing a triple challenge with this card - using the sketch from CAS-ual Friday, the use a new to you inky technique challenge from Less is More, and the colours from annabelle stamps colour challenge which are orange, raspberry and olive.

For the inky technique, I used twinkling H2O's to create the pearly background.  I painted them with a waterbrush onto a brand new rubber eraser and stamped the orange leaving a gap for the green.  I then stamped the cake onto and off centre in raspberry ink and embossed with clear gloss.  I stamped the ribbon and candle in the same ink but without embossing.  The olive greeting is from Waltzingmouse.

I think I cursed the weather with the hot colours though as the blue sky has gone and we're back to grey so I think I may go and make more Christmas cards.....

Craftilicious x

Christmassy Less is More

As it was so cold and dull yesterday, it put me in the mood for making Christmas cards, so I used my new waltzingmouse tiny trees set to create a Christmas card for CAS-ual Friday and I liked it so much, I've decided to use this week's one-layer inky theme at Less is More to do another.

I used a tiny 3x3 inch card - I really love these little cards - and masked off the top and bottom to create an inky background.  I used a blue cosmic shimmer, spritzed and dried with a heat gun so I could "blow" the puddles around to create interesting shapes.  Then I stamped the green tree teardrops by mixing two inks directly on the stamp.  I then stamped the two different length trunks and allowed them to dry.  I stamped the swirly stars in white and embossed with snowflake embossing powder.  I'm not sure if this is meant to be lights or frost, but I think the white works for either.  I finally finished with a simple sentiment, from the same stamp set, in one of the shades of green I used on the trees.

I'm also entering this into Secret Saturday challenge as their theme this week is Christmas is Coming and Crafty Hazlenuts Christmas Challenge which is one layer or simple this week.

I'll try to do something more summery later I promise as there is a hint of actual blue sky outside this morning!

See you later.

Clean & Simple CAS-ual Friday

For this week's CAS-ual Friday challenge, the girls have joined forces with Clean & Simple and used one of their sketches for the basis of the challenge.

After last weeks horrendous glue dot torture, this simple sketch is a pleasant and welcome return to something a bit less taxing for the start of the weekend!

It's been more like blumming October here today than August - I even had to put my office light on at work this afternoon it was so dark and grey - so my first thought on seeing the sketch was to make a Christmas card as I was feeling a little chilly.  I used the tiny trees set from Waltzingmouse Stamps to create a simple two shaded tree, and then added "snowflake" embossing powder for the decorative lights.  The greeting is from the same set.  I added three rows of twine and a little dp border.  Very quick and simple so I may well make a set of these in different shades to add to my christmas card stock while I'm in the mood.

I wanted to get back into summer though, so decided to use the same set but without the snowy feel, so this is my second card.  I stamped a couple of trees this time side-by-side onto kraft paper and used the friends always sentiment as it seemed to me that they trees were friends.  I finished it with a strip of lime green card with some golden gems.

I think it ended up slightly autumnal so I may go and look out another set to see if I can't make an altogether more summery card to remind me that summer is still hiding behind the clouds somewhere...

Thanks for visiting - see you later.

Sentimentally Focussed....

I love sentiment stamps, and can't resist them when I see them, so I do have probably too many, and use only a limited few.  I am trying to remedy this by creating a stamp archive file so I can more easily see what I've got by theme as well as manufacturer and I'm starting with the sentiments as they are really hard to read backwards when you've only got the stamp itself for reference (I don't keep the original packaging as I file all my stamps in binders on ezmount panels, or in empty cd cases for the clear stamps).  So whenever I see a challenge that focuses on sentiments, I like to play along, and there is one such challenge this week at One Stop Craft challenge and I've made this for it:

I took my inspiration for the colours and style from the photo inspiration challenge currently on the Stamptacular Sunday Challenge  which is this stunning image (wish my fireplace looked like this lol!) so I am entering their challenge as well.

With the blacks, creams and sparkle, I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to break into one of my favourite paperpads from GCD studios "Paris Nights" which is full of velvet flocking, damasks and pearly shimmers - I do find it so hard to cut lol!  I selected a black and creamy-gold velvet damask and cut a strip for the middle of the card, matted it onto plain black and added a champagne glitter top and bottom border.  My sentiment is from the great range by Paper Makeup Stamps which are available in the UK from Quixotic Paperie and there are some for every occasion - I know cos I have a lot of them!!!  I stamped onto thick white card, cut and embossed with a nestie and then cut the next size nestie out of black for a mat.  To get the champagne glittered borders, I drew around the outside of the two nesties and cut by hand.  I finished with some seambinding ribbon, 3 champagne roses and a few gems for added sparkle.

I'm really pleased with the rich results, so I may have to give it to my DH as I don't think I can bear to give it away ;-)

Music lover

Sorry but this is a scanned image so the colours are a bit flat, I forgot to photograph it before I took it to work for the birthday club to sign so I had to make do with a scan.  This is for one of our colleagues whose birthday is today and he's quite a muso so I thought this was the perfect image.

It's a simple collage image stamped and coloured with copics with a tiny touch of glitter and shimmer on the cd.  I created the musical score background by stamping the background stamp at different angles and masking each off before stamping again.

I can't find a "music" challenge, so am entering it into a couple of anything goes:

Wedding Cake

I made this cake for friends who now live in Norway but got married in Ireland a couple of weeks ago - they should have received it by now so I think its safe to blog.  Unfortunately we couldn't get to the wedding but I hope they had a fabulous day.

It was really hard to get a good photograph of this card, but if you pop it out large, I think the detail just shows.  I used a new damask cake stamp from papermania and stamped in a pale blue with an overcoat of embossing ink onto a grey pearl card and embossed with clear glossy embossing powder.  The cake stand was embossed in ultrafine silver.  I cut it with a nestie and cut a matching silver mat, and pierced holes to poke the roses through.  I overstamped the sentiment, from the new fabby Waltzingmouse set, with black stazon so it could stick to the embossing.  I added a blue vellum base and stamped the co-ordinating swirl from the set in the corners, and finished with a little blue seam binding ribbon.

CAS-ual glitter glue

Well, this week's CAS-ual Friday challenge, which is to use glitter on glue dots, almost had me beat!  The problem is, that we don't get that brand of glue dot in the UK (well I've never seen them).  The brand we have here isn't such a pretty shaped dot - the ones I have are not at all round, and have odd pointy bits, so when you apply glitter they REALLY don't look so good!!!!

I refused to be beaten and miss a week however, so I used two strips of double-sided tape and glittered those once applied to a kraft base card and stamped a doily border.  I then added a sentiment and "made" my own glue dots by using my crop-a-dile on the centre of my messy glue dots to get a properly round dot.  It turned out to be VERY tricky and made a real mess of my crop-a-dile so I don't recommend it - and the swirl I intended to make became a shorter line of just 3 dots - but I'm hoping for brownie points for determination and ingenuity ;-)

Can we have an easier challenge back next week please????

Thanks for stopping by.

Punk Princess

Good afternoon LIMettes.  I'm a bit later than normal with my challenge entry this week as we spent the whole day at Magna yesterday with our friends and their 3 children.  As we don't have kids and only see them occassionally as they live in Herefordshire, I forget each time they visit just how tiring it is.  If you're looking for a good day out with kids under 12, then I can't recommend Magna enough - we all had a great time.

This week's LIM challenge is an interesting one - use the colours of your flag, which for me in the UK meant either red and white or red, white and blue depending on whether I use the English or Union flags.  I opted for the latter and decided to colour one of the fabby images I chose from my Tiddly Inks win - this little lady is called Pinky Punker and you can expect to see a pink version very soon as she is brilliant to colour with the massive beehive of hair, but I thought she'd fit right in on Carnaby Street in red and blue.

I coloured her with copics, added a little glitter for extra punk, and created a sentiment in WordArt in Old English font.  A red and blue mat onto a white base and she's ready to rock!

Hope you like her ;-)

Beach Bum

Well, it's the first of the month again, so time to launch a new challenge over on St Luke's Charity Cards Challenge and this month our challenge is "I do like to be beside the seaside".  There's a gift voucher for Quixotic Paperie as a prize this month so do pop over to the site and play along.

I created a beach scene as a collage of torn papers and printed my beach bum sentiment and stamped  the clouds over and cut them out.  I added one of the 3 beach huts from the Molly Blooms beach hut stamp which I coloured with pencils in ice-cream colours.  The "bum" image is a free digi from Leighs Paper Creation and I just love the humour in it!  I matted onto a black mat, and stuck the images on so they deliberately overhung the mat but stayed within the card edge.

Have a sunny day :-)
